Friday Night - Quick Sketch

I had just 30 minutes to spare tonight and couldn't resist playing a bit with the ole Prismacolor pencils while I was waiting for some glue to dry on a jewelry project (more on that later). This was a quickie sketch with the pencils and stamps and ink.

Had a great time celebrating my birthday and my daughter's college graduation at a local winery! What more could a girl want?

It's a cold and rainy October day and my daughter, Elyse, her fiance, Chris, my hubby, Dave and I set out for Seven Mountains Wine Cellars. My daughter and her fiance had never been to a wine tasting before, so we thought she enjoy the experience. Yes, indeed...she certainly did! This weekend marked the debut of the winery's seasonal Cranberry wine...and they celebrated it with a nice buffet including roasted turkeys, stuffing, etc and live music. We had a great time!

Today is my 51st birthday and I'm so excited about the possibilities in the year ahead. I tend to be just a little self-indulgent on my birthday. This year, quite by accident, I came across a small cotton rug with an Art Nouveau inspired pattern at a vintage shop. I just loved the colors and although I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, I know it will have a home in my studio somewhere. The picture below doesn't do it justice and the colors are a bit off, but I really like it. I may even alter the center bit somehow...we shall see.

New thrift store find...quality cotton rug for my studio

I'm taking a free workshop from Rhomany of Rhomany's Realm called "Whimsical Workspaces" and hoping to gather some ideas to add some personality and character to my current studio. I revamped it not long ago and painted a lot of wooden furniture pieces all the same color - off white and now my studio is just too monochromatic (white walls, white furniture). I thought I'd love the look, but it's just NOT ME! I am looking forward to making some colorful changes.

The other thing I treated myself to is a year-long course taught by one of my favorite instructors, Tam Laporte (Willowing) called "LIFE BOOK 2012". It's an art journaling, mixed media exploration course with 24 lessons/2 per month - one taught by Tam and the other is taught by a guest instructor. There are a LOT of talented teachers involved with this project and I cannot wait to get started in January.

Heat Wave

The frequency of my postings and the time I spend making art really decreases in the summer months. The outdoor activities (both work and play) pull me away from my studio and into the fresh air and sunshine. We've had record highs here in Central PA, with temps climbing over 100 degrees. Amazing!

Another reason I haven't been here is because of a new, unexpected addition to the family, Wilhemina (Mina for short)...she's certainly made our lives more interesting! I'd forgotten how much time and energy kittens need (just trying to keep them out of trouble and safe!). She's a sweetheart and a little terror all rolled up into one tiny, furry bundle.

I recently finished up an Art Deck project for the Travelers' H'Art, Capolan Group (Red Dog Scot, Covino, CA). I've belonged to this art exchange group for many years, although I haven't been as active with the group as I once was. So many wonderful artists are members and it's fantastic participating in the collaborative projects that hostess, Red Dog, puts together.

The project was to put together a 3 1/2" x 5" tarot card image with the influence of Nick Bantock's art. I was assigned The Star card. My piece is a digital collage which used more than 20 individual images combined and transformed into one card. The bird and flowing water are traditional symbols for this card, along with of course, a star! I had a lot of fun with this work and particularly enjoyed working using vivid colors.

A few weeks ago, I also finished up my entry for the Hearts and Hands for Sendai quilt block. My block will be combined with the blocks of other crazy quilters into display quilts which will be hung in Japan and money will be raised to support victims of the recent natural disasters.

Lesson 1 - Faces in Technicolor Class

Practice - Lesson 1 "Faces in Technicolor"

Spent the afternoon practicing a new skill...painting faces using "non-traditional" colors, using acrylics. I am taking Sharon Tomlinson's class, "Faces in Technicolor". , I was a bit frustrated at first with this technique, but also had fun at different points too. I'm anxious to keep practicing and to do the other lessons in the course. It's good to stretch and grow!

I'm not thrilled with my results and might play with this one some more to see if I can improve it without making it worse.

"Fantasy Art" Themed Blocks for ICQA Swap

My 6 "Naked" Blocks for a CQI Swap

This past week, I've been working on cutting and sewing 6 "naked" blocks for a Crazy Quilters International (CQI) swap that started today. The swap involves 5 other crazy quilters. Each member of our group comes up with a theme of their own and sews 6 blocks. The blocks travel together to each of the quilters and each person in rotation selects a block and embellishes it. The rotation continues until all 6 blocks come home (5 will be embellished and 1 will be left for me to work on). This type of rotation swap is called a DYB (Do Your Block) swap.

I decided to use a "Fantasy Art" theme and used pieces by Josephine Wall (yes, I have permission to use her images!). I just love her paintings, they're amazing...very colorful and full of intricate details.

"A New Beginning" - Mixed Media Folk Art Angel (Easter 2011)

Whether you celebrate the Christian Easter Holiday or not, spring is a wonderful time for a new beginning. Today, I celebrated in my own way - immersed in paints, inks, and papers and full of the joy of creating.

This folk art style, mixed media angel, "A New Beginning" was collaged together on a mixed media paper substrate...topped with various printed papers, ink, water soluble crayons, acrylics, matte medium, etc. She is 14" x 17".

I hope your holiday weekend included some time for your own favorite creative pursuits!

You Tube - Vlog Every Day in April Challenge

I've been away from my blog for a LONG time, but hoping to get here more often in the coming weeks.

I'm trying something new today...an experiment of sorts...this is my first attempt at a VLOG in response to the "Vlog Every Day in April" Challenge on YouTube. Some of my fellow artists have inspired me to give it a try.

I'm camera-shy and I'd like to get over that as eventually, I'd like to share some art techniques with others online. I'm looking forward to learning how to use the camera and adjust my lighting (which I think will prove to be a challenge in my basement studio).

Naked Crazy Quilt Block - Hearts & Hands for Sendai Quilt for CQI

"Naked" Block for "Hearts & Hands for Sendai"

As I mentioned in a previous post, Crazy Quilting International (CQI) has put together a friendship quilt/fund-raising project to benefit the victims of the earthquake in Japan. Some of our members are from Japan and thankfully, they survived the quake.

I combined a selection of fancy fabrics and Japanese patterned cotton blend fabric and created this block using the flip and sew technique.

This was the first time I sewed with my new Brother Sewing Machine. It is a challenge getting used to the computerized stitching and I'm clumsy reaching for buttons and levers. I was so used to my old machine and my brain needs to be retrained! This is similar to driving a car for several years and then getting a new one and having to figure out how to operate the "bells and whistles".

I hope to start decorating and embellishing my block over the next several days and will post my progress.

It's not too late for quilters to join the project!

Hearts and Hands For Sendai Project Description

This project will be dedicated to helping those affected by the earthquake tsunami disaster in Japan. Per Hideko Ishida's request, all quilts will become a part of an exhibit in Japan where money will be raised by viewing the quilts. Ultimately, these quilts may be auctioned and the proceeds given to a charity designated by Hideko Ishida, our Japanese CQ Sister! We will keep everyone informed as time progresses. This project is open to the quilting community at large!

Guidelines are as follows:

Theme: Friendship and re-building of a country

Finished block size: 8 inches

Colors: Jewel Tones

Style: traditional or crazy quilt blocks will be accepted

For traditional quilt blocks, there are no pattern restrictions. The only requirements are the size and the colors. Finished size is to be 8 inches (20.32 cm). Please allow a half inch seam allowance. Colors are jewel tones. No restrictions to the type of fabric used.

For crazy quilt blocks:

Cut foundation at 9 inches (22.86 cm), piece the entire foundation.
Baste a line at 8 inches (20.32 cm) to stop embroidering
Do not add beads or charms past 7 ½ inches (19.05 cm)
Zig zag edges to prevent edges from fraying.
Add your name and address on the back of the block.
Mark the block with “UP” to show which side is the top
Prefer all fabrics used be “fancies” (ie: silk, satin, taffeta, velvet) but if you have
some kimono fabrics or other oriental themed fabrics in your stash you are
welcome to use them.
All beading MUST be double stitched and knotted with BEADING THREAD!!!
NO exceptions!!! These items will be handled a great deal and beads, buttons,
charms are among the first to begin to loosen. Embellishments – may be done
by machine or by hand.
Lace and other motifs are acceptable and must be securely attached
Trims are acceptable and must be securely attached
Silk Ribbon Embroidery (SRE) is acceptable.
Tatting and crocheted butterflies and dragonflys, etc are acceptable and must
be securely attached

Don't Be Afraid to Take a "Do-over"! Improving "Finished" Paintings

I've learned so much over the past year...even the past few months by reading books, blogs, and taking online classes. I've spent my spare time practicing drawing and painting (both watercolor and acrylics)...and my mistakes have been some of my greatest teachers along the way.

Tonight, I was sitting in my studio, contemplating my next project and looked up to see some of my earliest attempts at painting from a few months ago. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is that you can take a "do-over" and paint over almost anything with white or another neutral and make some changes. I decided to see if I could fix up one of my little 6" x 6" mixed media pieces on canvas. I just never really felt satisfied with her. So, I painted over much of the face with flesh tone (Yes, the eyes and everything!) and re-drew and repainted her features. She's not perfect yet, but I'm happier with her now. It's amazing what a little paint will do! See what you think! Am I embarrassed looking at my "Before" version? Well...perhaps a little, but I thought it was more important to show you that it's okay to "revisit" your paintings and to keep refining your work as you gain skills. As always...wishing you peace and joy in the creation of your art!

Mermaid Homework Assignment Two - Whimsy Style Mermaid

Part Two of my homework assignment for Willowing's "Magical Mythical Makings" Mermaid Week was to create a whimsical, folk artsy mermaid. This is not my typical style, but I sure had fun making her. This mixed media piece was done on canvas...background is paper, acrylics, water soluble crayons, ink...the mermaid was done using acrylics, ink, gel pens, crayons, watercolor pencils and graphite.

Our next lesson is on Unicorns and Faeries in the style if Brian Froud...should be fun! Loving this class and my fellow students are wonderful. Had a great online chat with our instructor and several classmates today...nice meeting people from around the world and sharing ideas.

More Homework - Chagall-inpired Mermaid on Wood

Homework - Chagall-inspired Mermaid - (definitely NOT excited about my outcome)

The mixed media class, "Magical Mythical Makings" (Willowing.ning.com) has certainly pushed me to explore new methods and media. This lesson required us to create a mermaid painting on wood which captured Marc Chagall's style. If you've never seen Chagall's work, I urge you to take a peek. It's full of chickens, birds, fish, splattered flowers, goats, bulls, guitars, buildings and houses, moons and curvy, topless women with men fondling them...and these elements are all together in the same picture. A bit out of my element...but I gave it a go...after all, it was homework.

I have to admit, I didn't capture Chagall's style very well...his artwork doesn't speak to me at all, so I didn't feel inspired, but mermaids are a fun subject. Nonetheless....I had a good time and got some good chuckles along the way. My mermaid came out looking like a G-rated "Chagall Barbie"...lol...and my mer-man originally looked just like Michael Jackson until I made some adjustments. I found the experience of working on wood unique and I enjoyed making flying fish and musical goats. I learned that I want to learn how to draw men better. Not thrilled with my outcome and I'll likely gesso over the whole thing and use the wood for another project, but looking forward to future classes. So far, a very enjoyable experience!

Finished My Homework! - Gustav Klimt Inspired Goddess Painting

My final painting of Hera! I think she's done...worked on her hands and a few other small details. I could probably keep on "tweeking" things forever, but need to MAKE MYSELF STOP!!! Seriously, I've spent so many hours on the little details...what will I do with my free time until my next class on Monday? I guess I'd better catch up on all the housework I've missed out on while painting.

Day 5 Progress - Klimt-Inspired Goddess, Hera

This is my Day 5 progress on my "homework" from Tam LaPorte's (Willowing) class. Our assignment was to create a Klimt-inspired goddess on a large canvas. Tonight, I mainly worked on the background layers and small "repairs". Still have a little to do on this painting...probably one more session and I'll finish her up. I'm liking her!

My classmates are talented and producing beautiful paintings...very fun to watch everyone's progress. Meeting people from around the world has been a great experience. Very supportive and encouraging folks!

Day 4 Progress - Klimt Inspired Goddess Hera

Well...I still have a lot of work to do on my Klimt-inspired goddess, Hera, that I'm doing for Tam LaPorte's class. I want to fix her hands, have lots of detail to add to the halo, shading to add to branches, touch ups on face and hair, etc. Lots of small detail work to do. My biggest problem is trying to decide what to do with the background...colors, layers, etc. Not sure yet. She's taken me many hours and I figure I'll finish her over the weekend. Not exactly the same style as Tam's but I just went with what "came out" as I painted.

Day 2 Progress - Klimt inspired Portrait

Oh my...I am not used to working on such a large canvas! I worked for hours and all I got done was the face and hair...made some mistakes along the way and had to "patch things up" but overall happy with her look. Started on the dress and did one quick layer on the peacock. I like a challenge and hope that I can find time this week to put into this.

So enjoying seeing the work of my classmates on Willowing's Ning site! Very supportive and prolific bunch. Several of my classmates are finished already!

Klimt Inspired Portrait of Hera and Her Peacock

I recently started another class with Tam Laporte - Willowing.ning.com - entitled "Magical, Mythical Makings". For Week 1 homework, we were to begin a large canvas portrait of a goddess (Roman, Greek, Egyptian, etc.) and we had to use Klimt's style as inspiration.

When I started looking up goddesses on the web, I came across Hera, Greek Goddess of Love and Marriage. She appealed to me immediately and once I found out that the peacock was her favorite bird, that sealed the deal. Peacock feathers and Klimt's use of oval shapes are an ideal pairing.

Tonight I started the sketch and tomorrow I will begin painting with a mix of acrylics and watercolor crayons.

I know this shot is a little hard to see. I didn't want to make my graphite too heavy on the canvas as it smudges so easily. Wish me luck...I'm not used to painting on such a large canvas 22 x 28, but I'm really excited about the project so far. I find getting started - coming up with the idea - is the hardest part.

Mini Tutorial - Heart Ornament for Valentines Day

Hello My Friends,

Today, I thought I'd walk you through a quick and easy heart ornament, perfect for a little Valentines Day gift. This is my own design, but feel free to copy or share.

Supplies Needed:

Clear plastic or glass ornament (the wider the opening at the top of the neck, the better).
Scrapbook paper - two pieces in colors that contrast but look nice together
Square pattern or punch in a size that will fit inside the ornament (mine was a 2" square punch)
Heart pattern or punch - smaller than the square
Gel pens
Glue
Ink pads or fluid chalk pads
Hole punch
Eyelet and eyelet setter
Beads
Tiny hearts punched out of double-sided paper or cardstock
Tweezers
Ribbon

1) Choose two papers that look nice together. Thinner paper works best as you will be rolling your little artwork into a tube shape to insert it into the ornament later on. Punch out one square of each paper and one heart from each paper.

2) Glue heart from paper 1 onto square cut from paper 2. Blue the heart from paper 2 onto the square from paper one. Glue both squares together back-to-back.

3) Decorate the hearts using Gel pens in the colors of your choice. You can decorate the edges of the squares too, if desired. I used a gold metallic ink pad on the edges.

To add more depth to the piece, you can use rubber stamps with ink or fluid chalk to stamp on designs.

Decorate both sides - they don't have to be exactly the same...do whatever "your heart desires".

To insert the eyelet, punch a hole using a hole punch tool or a large needle...don't get too close to the edge of the paper or the eyelet won't set properly. Remember to work on a cutting board or mat or other suitable surface.

Insert the eyelet and use your eyelet setter and hammer to set.

Attach a colored string or thread through the eyelet and tie two ends together to make a loop.

Add beads, tiny heart cut outs (double-sided paper), buttons, stars...whatever you'd like to the ornament by dropping them through the ornament neck and letting them settle to the bottom. I found these little L-O-V-E beads in my stash and dyed them with alcohol ink (cranberry).

Now for the tricky part. Very gently, roll your heart square into a tube shape. Be very careful! Insert the tube into the ornament keeping the end of the string hanging out the top of the ornament (you'll be attaching this to the top when you close up the ornament). Once you get the heart squares inside - you'll have to use whatever means you have handy (long tweezers, pencil, knitting needle, chopstick, etc.) to UNROLL the paper and flatten it. Be patient - I found that long tweezers worked the best.

Next hold the ornament upright...figure out how you would like to position the heart within the ornament. Adjust the position by using the string attached to the ornament to raise or lower your heart. Once you've decided where it looks best to you. Now you have to figure out how to attach your string. It depends on your ornament's construction. Sometimes, you can attach it to a loop under the cap. Sometimes you can hold the string against the neck or the ornament with the excess hanging over the side. Place the ornament cap on the ornament to close it. You can cut off remaining string or tie it around the outside neck.

Add ribbon, beads, silk flowers or whatever embellishments you'd like to the outside neck.

Tip - using a toilet paper roll standing on it's end to hold the ornament between steps keeps it from rolling away.

Revisiting a "True Colors" Round Robin Journal Project

I was cleaning up my studio last night and came across a box containing artwork done collaboratively with other artists in a "Round Robin" style. One of the projects in the box brought to mind a fun technique that I used to decorate the cover of a windowed board book journal. I created this technique quite by accident when I was playing around one day, and I really liked the effect. I thought I'd share the technique with you on my blog!

First, let me give you some background on the original project. One of my very favorite books for mixed media art inspiration is "True Colors: A Palette of Collaborative Art" by Kathryn Bold/Somerset. To me, this book is a "must have" for anyone interested in mixed media. The book features a Round Robin Journal project where each artist involved created a journal with a chosen color palette. The journals were mailed from artist to artist within the group and all of them were required to create a page or pages using the color theme chosen by the journals's originator. The books were heavily embellished by each artist and the pictures in this book are EYE CANDY!

One of the Artist Groups I belong to, Travelers H'Art and Capolan.org run by the talented Red Dog Scott runs collaborative projects. I hosted a "True Colors" Round Robin Journal Project within the group. Several artists signed up and each of us chose a color palette. I chose "Forest Floor". Others in the group chose color themes like Rainforest, citrus colors, sunset, sepia and more.

I bought a board book to use for my journal which included a couple of pages with small windows cut out, giving artists an opportunity to create using those windows to highlight focal points on pages. Before I could send the journal off to the first artist, I needed to decorate the cover and create the first entry in the book.

Here is a shot of the cover...very textured and meant to look like the leaves you'd see on the floor of a forest in the autumn.

Supplies needed:
•    Matte medium (I use Golden or Matte Medium)
•    Brush suitable for matte medium (don't use your good paint brushes!)
•    12 x 12 scrapbook paper (rawhide texture) in shades of brown, tan, rust, olive and/or green - I got mine at Michael's. If you cannot find rawhide texture, you may be able to substitute other heavily textured paper.
•    Earthy-colored scrapbook or decorative papers
•    Scissors
•    Tissue paper decoupage paper, or other thin paper with images of dragonflies, acorns, feathers, pine cones, birds or other outdoorsy images. You can buy this ready-made or create some of your own with tissue paper, StazOn Permanent Ink, and rubber stamps.
•    Craft acrylic paints in forest floor shades - browns, greens, copper, gold, bronze metallics, and paint brushes
•    Distress Ink in browns, sepia, etc. (optional)

Assorted Papers Used to Create the Forest Floor Layers

Instructions: (I'm really going to have to make a video of my processes one of these days! Pictures just don't show all the steps in enough detail!)
1) Cut some leaf shapes from the rawhide paper, using the folds in the paper as leaf veins and stems. You can draw the leaves in pencil first or use a pattern if you'd like or you can be FEARLESS and just start cutting out leaves.

2) Cut dragonflies or other small images from tissue paper or other thin paper. I like using tissue paper because of its transparent nature. Alternatively, you can use the top ply/layer of a patterned dinner napkin.

3) Tear up a sheet of the brown rawhide paper or other textured paper, paper bags, or other brown or green scrapbook paper into pieces...do NOT make them uniform shapes or sizes, but rip them into sizes ranging from 1/2 " x 1/2" on up, depending on the surface you are trying to cover. Note: These pieces of paper will be layered to represent the layer of pieces of leaves and other debris which often exists in the forest during autumn.

4) Using basic decoupage techniques, apply the torn pieces of paper from step 3 onto the page surface. Apply matte medium to the surface of the page where you want to place your first piece of paper. Also apply matte medium to the back of the piece of paper. Lay the wet paper onto the page surface. Apply even more matte medium on top to seal/glue the paper down. Continue to layer pieces of the ripped paper and the leaves you created in Step 1 to the page. See the photo below. I purposefully used pieces of paper in contrasting colors to illustrate this step (I used all shades of brown for the journal I created). Add dragonflies or other tissue paper images, if desired. Beware...once you put matte medium on tissue paper, it becomes very fragile and tears easily...you need to place the image on the page quickly.

This shows the first few pieces of torn paper and leaf cut outs, decoupaged to the page with matte medium.

5) Once you've covered the page with decoupaged paper, let it dry completely. If you are pleased with the colors and texture, you can stop at this point. For my Forest Floor Journal, I elected to use washes of brown, olive, and dark green acrylic paint and Distress Ink in various shades of brown and applied them to the page until I got the effect I wanted. If you want to make the leaves stand out more, you can add rust, orange, green or yellow paint to each of them. I also added some copper, bronze and golden metallic acrylic paints using a paintbrush.

I think I have serious issues...you know how I selected "FOCUS" as my word for 2011? Here's a prime example of how I get myself into a zillion projects and have all of them going at once. I have a bunch of mixed media projects on deck; one crocheted afghan started; I'm taking two art classes, have another commissioned painting to make, and one hand-pieced quilt in process. Then what did I do? Bought fabric to make yet another quilt. Yep...didn't have enough to do...lol.

I guess the good thing is: I almost always finish what I start...and I'm NEVER bored...and these things keep me from eating at night (well, that doesn't ALWAYS work but it's a good excuse, isn't it?).

I'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of the mail each day...expecting a book with a quilt pattern that I ordered Christmas weekend. I wonder if the postman thinks I'm a real oddball staring out the window as he fills the mailbox?!? Maybe he doesn't think the staring is odd, but I bet the sobbing and whimpering that happens when he doesn't deliver my package kinda creeps him out. :)

Happy New Year, Folks!

I'm not a big believer in making New Year's resolutions; however, I am a believer in choosing a word or two to help remind me of the areas of my life where I want to make some changes in the coming year.

The word "BELIEVE" is the word that I consider my "Life Word". It's my North Star...my guiding word and a very important word to me. Without faith, hope, and belief - how would we get through this journey we call life?

The word I've selected for myself for 2011 is "FOCUS". I have several personal and professional goals which are within sight...and I know that I need to set my course and work to focus my efforts to hit them. I am a person who tends to do things in a circular fashion vs. a linear fashion. I always have multiple projects going on at once...lots of "irons in the fire". I get distracted easily - "Oh LOOK! There's something shiny over there!" and off I go! I come back....eventually. Sometimes that trait is a blessing - allowing me to change directions quickly and be flexible. But I know that in order to reach my goals, I'll need to concentrate my efforts and go full steam ahead in order to succeed.

So there it is....F-O-C-U-S. There is a lotta power in those five letters. Time to harness the energy and "ride the wave".

Two Techniques for Dyeing and Painting Cotton Lace

I love experimenting and sharing what I learn with others! Tonight I decided to try a few different techniques to add color to vintage cotton lace (purchased on e-bay) by painting and dyeing it. I have a few new crazy quilt projects in mind and don't have any lace on hand to match.

I thought I'd share the following two techniques with you:

Hand Painting Lace with Alcohol Inks (top row below)
Microwaved Tea Dyed Lace (bottom two rows)

How to Hand Paint Lace with Alcohol Inks

This process results in rich, saturated color and the dye dries quickly and is permanent. The only downsides I see are the cost (as alcohol dyes are rather inexpensive) and the fact that the inks stain things they come in contact with easily (including your hands!).

Supplies needed:

alcohol inks
cheap paintbrushes - I recommend one brush per ink color
plastic pallete with shallow pans to hold ink
surface protection
latex or plastic gloves (optional)

Protect your surface - I used aluminum foil with paper towels on top.
Lay lace you wish to paint out flat on your work protected work surface.
Place a few drops of the ink on your palette. Notw - alcohol inks evaporate quickly so you need to move rather fast.
Dip a paint brush into the ink and brush it on the lace where desired. Repeat this process with each color of ink.

5) Turn lace over and see if you need to touch up any spots where the color didn't saturate all the way through the lace.

I used Adirondack Alcohol Inks - Farmer's Market Set (Eggplant, Lettuce, Cranberry)

How to Make Microwaved Tea-Dyed Lace:

Supplies needed:

Microwavable bowl
Cotton Lace
4 cups of water
5 tea bags (berry, cherry or pomegranate for a pink hue)
Hot pads or oven mitt for removing hot bowl from microwave
Wooden spoon
Tongs
Plastic cutting board or other surface that won't be stained by tea (used for drying)

Pour 4 or 5 cups of water into bowl and add tea bags
Place bowl in microwave and microwave on HIGH for 4 minutes
Add a few pieces of cotton lace and stir water/tea bags well with wooden spoon - be sure to "squish" (technical term, huh?) the tea bags to push more of the tea color into the water.
Microwave the lace/tea mixture for 2 more minutes on high.
Using Hot pads or oven mitt, remove bowl from microwave. Using tongs look at the color of the lace. If you're happy with the shade, remove the lace and lay flat on the cutting board to dry. If you want a deeper color, allow the lace to soak longer and keep checking every few minutes until it reaches the desired color.

I wanted to share the link to a sewing blog I discovered by accident which offers a free pattern for a cute, colorful, and quirky hand-sewn bird project made from small pieces of fabric. The blog, Spool Sewing, offers a few free sewing projects (grocery tote, apron, sewing machine cover) that you may wish to take a look at.

Creating the birds in this project are a great way to use some scraps from your fabric stash or if you want to take advantage of the post-Christmas sales and buy holiday print fabric at discounted prices. Perhaps you may even want to get a head start on making gifts for next year!

These birds are quick and easy to make and could be good projects for those who are beginners or just learning to sew. They make cute tree ornaments; look great displayed as a group (and perhaps nested in a basket or sitting the perch of a wooden birdhouse?): OR you can take some inspiration from the blog and design a mobile using small branches.

Here's one I stitched up just for fun tonight and embellished with a ribbon, silk flower and some beads. I even toyed with the idea of making a couple for my cats and adding catnip to the stuffing!

Time for Some "Sane" Quilting for a Change

Those who know me, also know that I lean toward the crazy side of life...crazy quilting that is. But...a Christmas present made me give consideration to sane quilting. One of the gifts my husband gave me was an Amazon gift certificate and his instructions were to "use if for FUN!" That was an invitation that was easy to accept as my Amazon Wish List is always long. The only item he told me MUST be purchased was an OTT Light to help provide me with better lighting for painting and sewing. The rest was to be used however I wanted to.

One of the items on my list was a newer Moda fabric line by Sentimental Studios called "Evening Mist" which I had fallen in love with. The fabrics in this collection are mainly greens, purples, muted greys and browns...all soft, romantic colors and patterns that speak to me. So, I ordered a quantity of each to make a quilt for the bedroom.

A design pattern online caught my eye and I thought it might work well for this fabric. The pattern is called, "Blooming Nine Patch". I ordered a used copy of the book which contains the pattern entitled "Tradition with a Twist: Variations on Your Favorite Quilts"target="_blank" (Blanche Young). The pattern looks intricate; however, I've read that it's fairly easy to put together. I'm a little intimidated, but I find sometimes...a little fear is a good thing when it comes to creating and completing a project like that provides greater satisfaction when you finish.

I'll post progress pictures as I go along. The fabric and book probably won't arrive until next week. It's hard to be patient, especially since I have some time off work to play. Guess I'd better find some other creative "trouble" to get into.

Play Day! Watercolor Eyes

It's the day after Christmas and our company is gone. What a lovely holiday! We have more guests coming this coming week to celebrate New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. In the meantime, I get to P-L-A-Y!

This evening, I'm catching up on my homework/lessons for the "Whimsical WaterColours" class I'm taking with Bonnie Rose Bryan. I made my very first watercolor eyes. I need to practice, but I find that I'm enjoying watercolor painting much more than I used to, thanks to Bonnie!

Again, I can't say enough about the online classes and instructors I've had. Really enjoy learning at my own pace. I'm even having fun doing the basic shape-shading lessons.

My son has been busy drawing since Christmas Eve when he got a set of Prismacolor colored pencils. It's so great to see him enjoying art too. He is quite talented and he recently mentioned he might try an online class too.

My poor husband! Between my two children and me, we are always making art messes. He is a computer engineer, so while he's creative in his own right; he creates with computers and various components rather than with paint. Maybe someday I'll convince him to pick up a brush?!? Yeah...sure...Rotsa Ruck.

What a wonderful holiday it was! I feel so blessed to spend my day with family and friends. Luckily, our area wasn't hit with the nasty weather that much of the East Coast is experiencing.

My sweet kids (yep, I call them kids even though they are 20 and 25 years old!) bought me a set of Caran D'Ache Neocolor II crayons. They have been on my "Wish List" for a long time. I had a great time testing them out and a reference chart of all the colors. Yes, I AM like a child myself, playing with my big box of crayons. My hubby gave me an OTT light and a lot of art supplies too. Guess I'm a pretty easy gal to buy for. :)

Mixed Media Commissioned Piece - Steps Outlined

A week or two ago, I made a small painting for my husband - "Heart for My Hubby". Someone saw it; liked it and contacted me about making one in a 20"x20" size for her husband for Christmas. I was thrilled as I always have so much fun working in one of my favorite color palettes: plum, pinks, reds, and orange (with a little green, gold, and blue thrown in). I thought I'd share a bit of how I put together my mixed media painting...

I used:

1 square canvas
Golden Matte Medium
Assorted papers
2" square metal paper punch
Old gift card
A wide variety of heavy body, fluid and craft acrylic paints
Assorted brushes
Palette
Rubber stamps (mounted and unmounted) - Foam stamps work too!
Scissors
Graphite pencil
Cheesecloth (for wiping brushes, smudging layers of paint, strategically removing paint when layering)
water/jar
Varnish spray fixative (Golden)

The canvas arrived earlier this week and I prepared it for the first layer of media. We selected a deep canvas so that we wouldn't have to frame the piece, but could paint the sides of the canvas to match the background.

Next I cut out 64 - 2" x 2" squares from sheet music, book pages, scrap book papers, etc. I affixed them to the canvas using Golden Matte Medium. First, I brushed some matte medium in the space where I wanted to place the square. Then I brushed more matte medium on the back of the square. I placed the square on the canvas and used an old gift card to smooth out the square, assuring that no air bubbles were underneath. Then I brushed even more matte medium on top of each square. Notice that I grouped the red, pink and orange squares in the center of the canvas where I planned to paint a large heart. Also notice that I used a variety of light and dark squares of paper and used patterned paper.

Next, I drew a large heart in the center of the canvas using a graphite pencil. Then I painted the background in shades of purple - eggplant, violet, wine, fuchsia, lavender, etc. I added several layers of paint and detail using rubber stamps, foam stamps, and a few texturizing tools creating accents in colors of lime, orange, blue and red. I used both mounted and unmounted rubber stamps. I paint acrylics on the rubber stamps and then place the stamp on the canvas to create some detail. When working on canvas, I actually prefer UNMOUNTED stamps as the are more easy to use on a flexible canvas.

You'll notice in the picture above that the first layer of colors look extremely bright. As I work adding layers and layers of paint by stamping, dry brushing, etc. the colors start to blend together better and depth and texture begin to emerge.

Next, I added color to the center heart in pinks, reds, and oranges. Again, I layer and layer more colors to create richness. All the layering takes me hours to paint. I really spend a lot of time working to get things the way I want them. You'll see the small "original" picture I made for my husband above the canvas, which I used as a model.

Then, I drew the letters on the heart. The letters were done in a few layers. The first layer was a golden orange, using a stenciling brush - tapping the paint around the outer edges of the letters. The second layer was done using Titanium Buff fluid acrylic paint and a chiseled brush.

The edges of the canvas were the last parts to be painted.

Once the paint was dry, I sprayed varnish on the entire piece.

This Week's Projects - Watercolor Girl and Crazy Quilting

I recently read that it takes 10,000 hrs of deliberate practice to become an expert at whatever pursuit you choose. I really believe that's true, so I have about 9,980 hrs more practice to do with watercolors. I'm learning, each piece that I do...each practice technique that I try and I feel I have so very long to go to "arrive". The GOOD thing is that it doesn't really feel like practice.

So...here's my most recent watercolor. I know it's not realistic-looking, but I'm really not going for that look at all. I am still really struggling with shading and flesh tone colors. I'm also trying to work on 3/4 portraits and need to work on that skill too. Part of my issue with shading is color mixing and the selection of paints that I have on hand. I put some better-quality watercolor crayons and sets on my Christmas "Wish List" so we'll see if Santa can help!

Also, finished up my work (upper right) on Lisa Alff's block for my Crazy Quilting International Group Round Robin. Lisa's color choices work well together and the block was fun to work on. Only a few more rotations on this project and my own block will be "HOME".

Happy Thanksgiving! Blessings to you and yours!

This holiday weekend has been fantastic, so far. I am so grateful for so many things in my life and it's always good to reflect on the good things in life. We just celebrated our 6-month wedding anniversary this week, so I'm feeling a bit romantic.

I had some time to do a little 6" x 6" mixed media Heart piece for my dear hubby. This was a fun little project, which gave me a chance to play with layers of paper and paint without having to focus as much as I do when painting people.

Four day weekend and I've been BUSY...BUSY...BUSY! I'm still working on painting the basement walls and stair railings and refinishing a few pieces of furniture for my studio.

I am also learning how to paint with watercolors and had a chance to do some practice from Lesson 1 of "Whimsical Watercolours Workshop" - with my lovely instructor, Bonnie Rose Bryan. In the past, I've found watercolors to be difficult; however, I never took lessons. I'm already finding learning the basics very pleasant indeed. I'll post some classwork once I have something to show beyond washes, glazes and other beginner techniques.

Now it's off to work on a Round Robin Crazy Quilting block for Lisa. I want to finish it up and get it in Monday's post.

Lesson 4 - Willowing's Art Heart & Healing

Well, finished my first piece in my newly-revamped studio tonight. I completed Lesson 4 of Tam LaPorte's "Art, Heart, & Healing" Course. I had such a wonderful time creating this angel...what an enjoyable evening! She is a mixed media piece: acrylics, gel pens, modeling paste, water color crayons, ink, papers, etc.The color on this pic is "off"; however, the piece is too large to scan. I have to figure out a better way to photograph pieces in the fall and winter when I don't have the benefit of good natural light.

I hope to create more angels in the coming weeks, I really like making them!

Budget Art Studio - Craft Room - Sewing Room

My Revamped "Budget" Studio

I decided to post about how I'm updating my basement art studio with "next-to-no" money. I hope that I can encourage folks who want a place to be creative, but haven't done so because they believe they need to spend a lot of money. SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM OF THIS POST FOR MORE PICS!

I have spent many years making art in my living room, dining room, bedroom, etc. and basically leaving a trail of "art mess" and projects in various states of completion everywhere! Over the last year or so, I've carved out a corner of my small, unfinished basement and dubbed it MY STUDIO. I use the term "studio" very loosely as it has been a real hodge-podge of plastic rolling drawers, and old desk, shelving, a an old kitchen table, etc.

UNINSPIRING is the word that kept coming up for me when I thought about my studio. My basement has just a few windows and poor lighting. I found myself starting to carry my art "stuff" back upstairs again just to feel more pleased with my surroundings. The basement studio definitely wasn't working! TIME FOR A CHANGE!

I poured through several editions of "Where Women Create" and "Studios" magazines to get ideas; however, I had one big problem - a very, very tiny budget. The other problem I had was not wanting to wait until I saved up enough money for my dream studio, I really wanted something NOW!

So, I decided to turn updating my studio with a small budget into a CHALLENGE...and I'm definitely a gal who likes a challenge!

As I started to write down some ideas about furniture, storage, colors, etc., I decided that no matter what, my studio had to be bright, functional, provide lots of storage, and casual enough that if I spilled paint or glue or matte medium (which I once spilled on my new living room carpet) that I wasn't going to be too upset.

So...I gathered together a "mish mosh" of old furniture - an unfinished bookcase, a sagging antique white desk that I got from a neighbor, an old walnut brown mirror, some old white fiberboard bathroom cabinets from my apartment days, and stuff from my existing studio (butcher block kitchen table, plastic rolling bins, etc.).

The first thing wanted to do was provide a uniform look to all the wood pieces. I decided to match everything with the antique white desk. So I went to Lowe's and purchased primer, satin latex paint in antique white, some additional accent colors (greens and purples) and a good paint brush. I already had sand paper, rollers, paint trays, etc.

Sanding and priming the furniture was time-consuming, but taking the time to prep the furniture before painting it was worth the effort. I must admit, I felt quite overwhelmed as this was more work than I thought it would be. It was very hard waiting for the primer and paint layers to dry. Once everything was painted the studio looked brighter and better immediately.

I took a trip to two local stores: TJ Maxx and Ross Dress for Less. Both stores sell overstock and last season items, including household goods. I was able to find several really pretty floral decorative cardboard boxes for $2.99 - $8.99 each. I found a nice curtain rod for $3.99. I went to Michaels and Joann Fabrics and found some 12x12 scrapbook paper (sale 5 for 99 cents) which matched the paint colors I chose.I found a cute birdhouse and a square framed print - both about $7 on the clearance tables.

I also gathered baskets, containers, and other decorative items that I had on hand at home.

In order to make my white plastic rolling drawers and plastic bins look a little more appealing, I I cut and inserted some of the scrapbook paper into the very front of the drawers. This gave them a more stylized look and made them fit into the decor a little better. I wrapped some of the paper around pencil cans too.

I still have more to do before I'll consider this finished - I need to put stuff on the walls, hang curtains, finish painting some additional shelves and label some drawers; however, I thought I'd show you the work in progress. There are two work stations: one for paper crafts, painting, stamping, beading, jewelry making, etc. and one for sewing and crazy quilting.

I spent less than $100 fixing up my little cement corner and I'm pretty pleased with the results. Let me know what you think. I'll add more pictures as I make progress.

Just took a few minutes to finish up my section of Gina's Block for the CQI Round Robin. It's off to Ely in tomorrow's mail. Lisa's beautiful block is next on my list to finish up - it's all in shades of gold, royal purple, black and burgundy and I think she'll be thrilled for it to make it's way home to her.

Week 1 Lesson - Willowing's Art, Heart & Healing Course

I have been a fan of Tamara LaPorte and her Willowing NING site for quite a while now. Tam has made a free, online video course available entitled, "Art, Heart & Healing". I've purchased some of her other courses and have been quite pleased, so thought I'd join this course as well. This free class has almost 1,000 members, so there are too many students for Tam to give individual feedback. Her NING community is very active and supportive and there are people of all experience levels there. Everyone seems to be producing great work...very fun to exchange ideas and view others' work.

The Week 1 Project involves an Art Journal Entry. I had a great time on Thursday evening, sketching, painting, stamping, etc. and staying up until the wee hours. Went to bed very late, but fulfilled by the experience. The image above is a portion of my journal entry. I'll post the entire piece at a later date. I still want to add some details before I'll consider it finished.

I know it's not a realistic looking piece, but I wasn't going for that style. I was following the instructor's step-by-step instructions, but the style is my own.

I so enjoy learning how other artists create and trying out their processes, but applying my own twist on things I've learned.

My weekend will be a busy one, so doubtful I'll get time to make any art (but you can be sure I'll be daydreaming about it until next time).

In Praise of Online Art Courses

I played around a little yesterday with a mixed media piece and had quite a pleasant afternoon. Still going to work on her a bit, I believe.

I have been so terrible at updating my blog and really would like to be more dedicated to posting. Sometimes, I wonder why I post...I suppose if I could be more diligent about documenting my journey, a purpose might appear.

It's not that I haven't been creating...actually, I've been carving out a little MORE time for art and other creative pursuits than normal. My children, although grown (25 and 20 yrs) are still at home, but are here less and less; leaving me a little more free time to spend in my studio.

I feel like it's time for a change and time to take a new fork in my art path. I've grown kind of bored of digital artwork and collages. I have felt very confident about my Photoshop skills; but really not confident at all about my "traditional" art skills (i.e. drawing and painting). I have been spending my time and energies trying to develop and grow in these areas.

Due to my crazy work schedule, I'm unable to attend art classes on the university campus; however, I've been investing in online courses with some of my favorite instructors. Each of these lovely women has a charming and informal personality and through their classes, I feel like I've gotten to know them. Their styles are all different and I'm learning techniques and methods from each one. The videos are shot in their homes/studios and they make you feel like you're sitting across the table from them making art. I love how each of these women shares their love for art with others - in my mind, people like this make the world a better place.

I thought I'd highlight them below in case you're interested in investigating taking some excellent online courses:

1) Willowing - I'm currently taking both "Fabulous Faces" and "World of Whimsy 2" - Tamara (Tam) Laporte is a warm and beautiful instructor living in the UK. She never fails to make me smile. She is encouraging and positive and I love her accent. Her instructions are clear and the videos are both entertaining and informative and her artwork is fun and uplifting. She is offering a FREE course entitled, "Art, Heart & Healing" which starts October 18, 2010 with over 13 hours of video lessons.

2) Paulette Insall - Paulette is a real sweetheart and her videos are very well put-together. She's very personable and easy to understand. Just looking at her artwork makes me happy. I've had the pleasure of taking Paulette's "Organic Dimensional Backgrounds" and "All About Faces" workshops. She just released a new class, "Color Me Beautiful" Contemporary Expressionist Portraits. I'm hoping to get to take that class at some point.

3) Sharon Tomlinson - I just started taking online classes with Sharon and her partner, Deryn Mentock, over the last month or so. Sharon is a delight...very likeable and her style is natural, easy and she makes you feel like you've known her forever. Whenever possible, she tries to show you supplies and techniques that are affordable and within reach for most people. Her work is gorgeous and I find Sharon to be someone I'd like to emulate. She works outside the home and finds time to make art each morning. She also shares her techniques with others...she video tapes her sessions and I find it very helpful that she shows you how to correct mistakes and demonstrates how to change direction when something isn't working. Currently I'm taking her "Faces" class and the class run by Sharon and Deryn, "Of Towers and Turrets". The latter is a really unique mix media and mixed metals course which teachs mixed media collage work and jewelry-making. I've just started this course and am accumulating all the metal working tools bit by bit.

Spring Maiden Digital Collage

I really enjoy it when I get the chance to create without a goal in mind...i.e. no deadlines, no theme...just time carved out of my crazy schedule to make something to please just ME.

My first try at polymer clay jewelry

This was my first try at polymer clay jewelry. Polymer clay pin inlaid with clay leaves, decorated with permanent ink, glass beads and mica powder. Color is a little "off"...but you get the jist!

Polymer clay is certainly an "unforgiving" medium. I can tell that I need some practice! This was fun though...lots of lessons learned. I guess it would help if I would read about polymer clay techniques. I tend to just "dive in" and play and figure things out as I go along. Sometimes that's a good style and sometimes not!

This is my studio mascot. Found him on the shelves of TJ Maxx...anyone who has ever shopped there knows that one never knows what they may find in the housewares section. The inventory changes constantly and you can often find strange, one-of-a-kind or unusual items there.

Arabian Red - Stacked Canvas Panels

Today I did a painting of a woman's face on a canvas panel and then decided to play around a bit and "stack" the painting on top of a collaged, painted and stamped background. Just for fun, I added some polymer clay tiles I had on hand.

It's a little bit "different" I guess, but I really enjoyed making her!

It's been ages since I've posted on here and I really need to make time to post more often. Life is busy, as always and it's rare that I get to spend a solid block of time in my studio. I did get a day to play over Thanksgiving Break and spent time working on a mixed media collage - had a blast! Not sure, but I may want to add on to this one. I have to think about it a while. Love the feeling of getting lost in creating a piece which is what I did with this one.

Mandaragon Citizen ATC Swap

Well - I lasted less than 24 hours without an art project pending. The Recollection Parlor decided to through out another ATC swap. This time, the challenge was to develop an ATC portraying a citizen of our imaginary countries. I had fun putting together Princess Palila. The national bird of Mandaragon is a peacock and any of my fellow Recollection Parlor artists also know that the sea is an integral part of life in this beautiful country.

Finally got my two ATCs featuring BYRON, into the mail for the current Recollection Parlor swap. We were given four different poses of Byron to incorporate into an ATC (3.5" x 2.5"). Byron was fun to work with and I enjoyed putting him into two very different scenes. "Byron Goes Ashore" shows Byron arriving on the shores of Mandaragon and "Byron Joins the Circus" is kind of like a "Where's Waldo" image, with multiple pics of Byron shown in different poses.

Quick Project - Vintage Inchie Magnet

My sister came for a visit and I wanted to introduce her to some simple art projects. She holds the opinion that she is not creative and I believe EVERYONE can create art. I bought her some basic tools and supplies to create her own INCHIES. We settled down at my dining room table, wine in hand, and I helped her walk through the process of creating inchies. My youngest nephew joined in too and created his own inchie and magnet.

This shot is of a magnet made from an inchie mounted on a piece of wood, painted black, edges dry-brushed in gold and with seed beads glued on for some added whimsy.

12"x12" Mini Art Quilt

I just finished my first art quilt for a swap hosted by Lenna's Creative Swaps. This swap encouraged the exploration of different fabric treatments and quilting techniques and the use of recycled or scrap materials.

For my piece, I used fabric scraps leftover from other quilting projects and some recycled fabrics from the costume designer from the local community theater. The center section was made using a "string quilting" technique which involved rotary cutting some of my small batik scraps into 1" strips, sewing them together end-to-end in a long "string" and then re-cutting into 6" strips and sewing them together in vertical columns.

The tree was given substance using interfacing and given texture using straight stitching. I used rubber stamps and black ink to decorate the leaves. The images include everything from women's faces, geometric patterns, and Celtic symbols. In addition, I embellished the leaves with beads and embroidery.

The binding was more challenging than I thought it would be and although I probably shouldn't say this, my sewing was crocked. Instead of tearing out my stitches, I stitched on the binding in curved lines several times. They say, "There are no mistakes in art!" and I think that's true.

So next, I will send this to the swap hostess and in return will receive an art quilt from another artist. Looking forward to getting one back!

Next it's time to get Michele's journal off to her. I have to add just a few finishing touches and I'll be done.

Well, my vacation didn't work out like I'd planned and life has thrown me more unpleasant curves; however, I feel like I'm finally coming up for air!

Creative Inspiration

Countdown to vacation! I feel like a kid who is three days away from the last day of school before summer break. I love my job; however, it sure is great to think about 10 days off. My vacation starts next week and runs through Labor Day. I plan to spend a lot of time working on my house and hopefully an equal amount of time having fun! That means I'm going to devote a day or two to ART!!! YAY! I plan to work on my acrylic painting class lessons and give my new artist crayons a try.

The family tree project has been coming along well. Who knew geneaology could be so much fun? I have some segments of the tree traced back to 1100! Incredible! We actually do have some royalty in our tree. We're related to James I of Scotland AND an Indian Chief. Pretty amazing! I hope to spend some time scanning in more old family pictures and records. Eventually, I hope to self-publish a book for my children and my sister and family. My kids don't have much interest right now, but perhaps later on, they'll want to know where they came from. I've enjoyed my role as the self-appointed family historian and hope one of them will pick up where I've left off at some point.

I'm also preparing for a 5k in September and the Tussey Mountainback 50 mile Relay which will be held in October, so running (or jogging in my case) is definitely going to be in the schedule somewhere! I must be nuts, but I'm sure I'll have fun. I'm part of an 8-woman team and I only have to run about 3 1/2 miles for my "leg" of the relay.

The weather has been incredible lately and I'm grateful that we seem to have been spared from the normal oppressive August humidity. I sure hope my vacation is full of sunny days and cool nights.

I'll write more soon and post some of my recent projects. I'm currently working a few altered journals, some collage postcards, and my entry for the Halloween Art Deck for Travelers' H'art/Capolan.

Wagon Progress

Just when I thought life was crazy enough with my job transfer, my lovely daughter, Elyse started having some serious health issues. After many tests,scans, and visits to various specialists, she has been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. This is a non-curable and progressive disease and we're hoping and praying that with treatment, she can get back to living and working as close to "normal" as possible. She's currently out of work and under doctor's care until at least October. Her job requires the use of her hands and right now, they are causing her a lot of pain. You probably also know that she's an artist in her spare time and she's still drawing, even despite the pain. Fortunately, she still lives at home, so we can help her out when she needs it.

As you would expect, this has taken a bit of a toll on all involved. We're working hard to stay positive and "keep on movin'" (no pun intended).

I'm behind even more on my projects. I've posted my progress on my Gypsy Wagon project for Travelers H'art below. I am behind and cannot meet the deadline for submitting this juried project, so I thought I'd post a picture (normally I wouldn't post something before it went off to be judged).

I find them easier to work with than watercolors.

Well...I'm pretty "jazzed" about my upcoming painting class, Paulette Insall's "Organic Dimensional Backgrounds" Class. I've been gathering my supplies and bought some new brushes today. This will be a much-needed change for me from my normal collage work. I'm ready to do something new.

I've had a hard time focusing on art since I returned from my vacation. I did work on a postcard image collage made from a fine arts painting last Friday and Saturday, but haven't finished it yet, but I'm counting on completing this on Mother's Day. This week I worked on a digital collage entry for an art card exchange for Travelers' H'art entitled, "I Celebrate the Body Human" and had to include a tasteful nude image. My collage was built on an image of the inside of a sea shell...used a vintage nude and an art deco antique pin image. I wanted to express movement, life, growth, etc. This tree theme just kind of evolved as I went along, so I just went with it. Last night I finished my altered wine bottle for the Recollection Parlor art exchange. It's hard to see from the picture, but the attached fiber is meant to look like seaweed draped down the side has a few small moon collages on abalone shells, a large shell collage or a woman and a mix of small sea shells, glass beads and charms. Mysts of Mandaragon Wine Labels

I'm still alive! I've just been really, really busy with all kinds of "life stuff". Work, two sick kids, and planning the high school reunion have cut my art time a bit. I hope to be back to normal soon!

Last weekend, I finished the labels for a wine label exchange for the Recollection Parlor Group. As I've said before, this group of artists have all developed imaginary countries. We are fortunate to have a slate of interesting projects ahead to help stretch our imagination. I am also exchanging a bottle with the group's lovely organizer, Trudi. I'm still putting the finishing touches on that and will be sending it out on Monday.

Misty's Encased Heart - First Attempt

Since I'm caught up with my Round Robins, I decided to try my hand at making an encased heart (ala Tejae's Encased Heart Class) to give to my honey for Valentine's Day. It's hard to tell in the photo, but I used crimson Premo Polymer Clay with antique gold accents and glass beads. For my first try, I was pleased, but I can see that once I get a little more practice, I'll be more happy with the results. I've already found some tricks of my own to help me with the process of shaping the interior heart and cutting and crimping the cased/outer heart. I sure hope he likes it!

Letter Play on Pride and Humility

Switched it up a bit on this round of the Vices & Virtues Journal...decided to do a little bit of "LETTER PLAY" instead of trying to find images to fit the theme. These letters were constructed with a cardboard base and painted with various metallics. Next I decoupaged some bits of tissue paper stamped with black archival ink on each letter.

Lori's Light Blue and Chocolate Journal

Hello! No, I haven't run off to the tropics...have just been very, very busy and SICK!!! Despite not feeling well, I was able to finish Lori's "True Colors" Journal entry this weekend. As you can see, her colors of choice are light blue and chocolate brown. The journal was full of vintage pictures, so I simply kept up the theme chosen by Lori.

I got my materials for the Encased Heart class and hope to start that work in the coming week. It would be really cool if I could make one of the hearts for Dave for Valentine's Day...we'll see!

I started to work on a "Family Tree Ornament" featuring my Grandmmother. I never met her as she was killed in a collision with a drunk driver. I still have more to do on it before I put it into glass, but it makes me happy to see her smile. BTW - Yes I DO know I have many "started" projects...but I really do get around to finishing most of them. I like to have a lot of variety! Evenutally, I hope to do ornaments of my whole family. Each ornament will have information about the person on the back!

One Dozen Crazy Gals

Map of Mandaragon

I started to work on my Map of Mandaragon for the Recollection Parlor Project. I just started painting with watercolors and let things develop rather than trying to sketch out my map first. Next I used pen and ink to draw coastlines, rivers, and shore effects. After that, I started to add features such as mountains, hills, seas, forests, etc. I'm obviously not done yet, but my new country (shown in green) is shaping up.

Gulf of Mexico - Here I Come!

I'm SOOOOOO excited! It looks pretty certain that I'll be heading to the beach on the Gulf of Mexico this spring with a bunch of gal pals! This is the first time since I was just a young lass that I've taken off with friends (without kids or my significant other). We have a great condo lined up just yards from the ocean! WOOOO HOOOOO!

Certainly does a lot for the creative spirit!

This weekend the only painting I've done is my basement walls (BOO!) I'm going to do some clay work for the "Recollection Parlor" project tomorrow. I also need to work on the Chocolate Brown and Blue Journal for the "True Colors" Round Robin. Always fun things to do!

Had a wonderful holiday. Enjoyed time with family and friends and now just taking a few extra vacation days at home to have some fun (and make some art!). Touched to the Core

About 6 months ago, I stumbled across the blog of a young mother of three who is battling cancer. Her journey started about a year ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since then, this courageous woman has faced bad news and more bad news as the cancer has spread through her body. Her posts and her husband's posts on her blog are both touching and tear-jerking, but very worth reading. This couple are the true picture of love, devotion, spirit, faith and courage. I feel their compassion toward one another and their beautiful children. Their faith inspires me. I have prayed and prayed for them as have many other people and watching their struggle from afar. I've never met her, but feel touched to the core by her story. Perhaps it's because of my own cancer history and hits close to home. I can only say that my admiration for her is only outshined by my hope for a miracle. Things don't look good for her right now and I ask that you pray for her. One of the pieces I did for a Travelers' H'art exchange was inspired by a posting by her husband. Her husband mentioned what a wonderful piano player she's always been and how he used to sit outside her practice room and listen to her play. My story and picture, "The Harp" were inspired by his story.

I know Marissa, a total stranger, has made a huge impact on my life.

Too Many Choices!

Above is some really "rough" embroidery I did on a batik block. I love paisleys and thought I'd through one in. I need to practice, practice, practice on my stitching skills. My old hands are stiff and tired all the time. Embroidery is a challenge. It used to be more fun! I keep thinking using my hands will keep them from getting even more stiff! Ah...the joys of getting older!

I just want to "do everything" and "try everything" related to art. I have so many books and magazines with ideas marked. I have a file of ideas and inspiration and just not enough time to do it all! I love the quilting/sewing I'm doing, but I'm also interested in building on my digital art skills and want to try 3D fantasy art. I've downloaded a free 3D drawing software package DAZ Studio, and hope to have time to play with it a little over the weekend.

I also got out my sketch pad journal and want to make an effort to sketch every day for just a few minutes. I want to improve my drawing skills but also feel like sketching sometimes gives me inspiration for future projects. The hard part is not expecting perfection and not judging my sketches and just to allow myself to JUST DRAW!!!

I have some work to do on one mixed media journal entry from the "Vices and Virtues" Round Robin. I need to finish up "Gluttony and Temperance".

I've come to the conclusion (however unrealistic it may be) that I don't want to work or clean or cook or do the chores! I just want to read and play all day. Maybe it's because I've worked since I was 14...and even often worked two jobs through out my life and put in lots of overtime. I really just feel like doing whatever I want to do! The older I get, the more I just enjoy being home in my own little world with my family. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy people, but get the most joy out of being in my little house.

I've been "away" from my blog for a bit - was feeling under the weather and other work and family obligations have kept me quite busy. I'm looking forward to taking several days off work at the end of December and devoting a substantial amount of time to sewing and mixed media art. Maybe the time off will sooth my craving to create! I'm also helping to organize the 30th reunion of my High School Class. It's quite a challenge trying to find people!

Well...off to do those chores I'm putting off...

Just finished another couple of blocks for my crazy quilt class. Next step will be seam embroidery and embellishments on my blocks. Guess I'd better remove the quilting clutter from the dining room in preparation for Thanksgiving!

Stamp Collage - 20 Minutes of Rip and Tear

I took a break from quilting today to do a quick project for "The Recollection Parlor" group. We had to use postage stamps, rip them into pieces and reassemble them into a 4"x4" stamp. We had about 20 minutes to do this (although mine took 25). Mine is so intricate, it looks almost like a "Where's Waldo?" picture. The next thing we're supposed to do is create another collage with a limited color palette. I don't have time to do that today, but will atempt that next. One nice thing is that I was able to use stamps from my late father's old stamp collection. Most of these are from the 1960s. Hope he's happy with how I've used them.

Batik Blocks - Flip and Sew Technique

Okay...I thought I'd practice my "Flip and Sew" crazy quilt piecing again today. This time, I used an assortment of batiks, which are more "ME" than the block I did yesterday for my class homework. I hope to create an entire batik quilt...and this will be for me. I give away so much of what I make, I really want to keep something for myself. The bright colors and patterns of batiks really make me happy. My dining room is a disaster as my sewing machine and ironing board have been stationed there for a few days. My poor family had to eat in the living room. Ah...sacrifice in the name of art...lol.

First Practice Block

Well...after a few hours of playing around with patches, I have a first attempt at a block. Not thrilled with the color choices (burgundy, green, gold, cream) but I didn't have enough of other fabric scraps which would coordinate together to use. I may go buy some more just so I have something to work on that I LOVE. I have to remember though...this is just practice for the class!

This was harder than I thought it would be! Will probably start on my batik brights block tomorrow. More later...

Satins and Brocades and Silks...OH MY!

As I sit here on a blustery, dark evening in front of my fireplace, I'm surrounded by my fabric stash trying to select pieces to use in my first block for my "Encrusted Crazy Quilting" Class with Sharon Boggon. I haven't made my final selections yet, but will do so in the morning when I have some natural light to better examine the colors together. Who knows...might end up back at the fabric store yet again tomorrow!

The class started today and we got our first lesson. I started reading this evening and am enjoying myself so far. Great material...and lots of good tips on color, layout and design. I'll start sewing either tomorrow or Sunday and hopefully by the end of the weekend, I'll have a finished block.

Class members seem to be from around the world, which really excites me. I LOVE meeting people from everywhere and sharing art and a little bit of culture too. Can't wait to get to know everyone.

What Would Happen if I Were in Charge of an Entire Country?

Well, I'm as surprised as you may be to hear that I'm going to run a country of my own! That's right...me...little ole me from Central Pennsylvania. And, I don't even have to leave home to do it.

I was very happy to receive an invitation to participate in a new project and artists' group called "The Recollection Parlor". Two artists, Trudi Sissons and Tanya, got the inspiration for the project while attending Nick Bantock's "The Forgetting Room" workshops earlier this year. The project will involve developing a world made up of countries developed by the artists. The group will work on related artwork and narrative writing describing aspects of their respective countries.

I'm thrilled to have been invited. The artist members are so talented (I must admit to being a bit intimidated) and I cannot wait to get to know them better and also grow as an artist and writer. I'll keep you posted! Mist

Butterflies for Julie

Today I finished up my GRASS GREEN entry for Julie Z's True Colors Inpsired journal. Julie's Round Robin "Journal" consisted of a metal tin with loose pages inside for each artist to decorate. I decided to be practical and sew a bookmark that Julie could use after the exchange. I created a collage of butterflies and ferns on an abstract background, printed on muslin, painted, sewed to a fabric backing, and embellished with baby rick rack and a hand-painted green and black daisy button.

True Colors Red Flowers for Vivian

Earlier this week I finished a two-page spread for a True Colors Inspired Round Robin. The journal originator, Vivian, wanted us to use flowers in shades of red, pink, and orange and she also likes vintage ladies. Althought this piece is not my usual style, I'm honoring her preferences and had a good time working in her book. The book is tiny so it didn't take long to finish my spread. I sewed and glued on some embellishments before inserting the pages into the journal.

Crazy Quilts on My Mind

I just got my supply list for the Encrusted Crazy Quilt Class I'm taking and that means I get to go SHOPPING tomorrow! I have almost everything I need to get started except for the silk emroidery ribbon.

Noticed some good articles in the latest issue of CQ Magazine Online - one by J. Marsha Michler regarding hand patching/piecing and a few others on creating holiday CQ gifts. Always find great ideas on that site and love to read more about the artists by following links to their blogs. Wish I had more time to devote to creating, but alas...bills to pay, so must work.

I have a few Altered Journal projects to finish up this weekend so I can focus my attention on my quilting class. I am ready to take a break from mixed media collage for a bit...still love it, but definitely ready to do something different.

Button Heaven

Remember that old Frank Sinatra song, "Heaven...I'm in Heaven...and my heart beats so I can hardly speak..."? Can a person actually feel that way about an inanimate object? YES, INDEED THEY CAN! I just bought a wonderful box full of antique and vintage buttons from a local couple who sells antiques. I was lucky enough to meet this dealer at a local antique shop. I visited his lovely home last evening and purchased my box of assorted treasures. I'm not a collector, so I have no idea what their value is. I just know most are circa 1900. I've had a wonderful time sorting through them and selecting my favorites for use in my embellished quilting project. Here are a few examples:
